Following on from his debut 'Life ep’ is UK based producer Tommy Mundell's new 5 track opus, 'Traveling Lights'. A record that's broad depth and emotive tones work just as well on the floor as food for the mind and spirit. Launching Sonic Heavy Records into a new space, after some time away.

Opener, “Travelling Lights” begins with deep swung hi hats and plucky layered hits across a pulsing and heavy dry kick. The soulful meandering melody line drifts in and out of focus (a Mundell trademark) and builds towards a fat baseline epoch to move us onto upper levels, towards the final third of the track. Setting the scene perfectly for this ep's direction of travel.

The second track, “Don’t Take War” enters more immediately while showcasing Tommy himself by adding a vocal narrative. Some wonderful intricate swung beat programming, with a low growling baseline that clearly references Detroits finest moments but then takes us further into the future. Hypnotically pulling you forward across a wider-screen of emotion.

Third track in, ‘’Scholars Become Guardians” skips on in with another solid opening, the soul filled bass thud and melodic pad lines supporting a burst of heavy chord tones. Edging us into the dance with a soundtrack set to destroy your speakers and offer you a journey ticket as-well. Vintage electronics and focussed dub-wise sound hits all add to the interest. The track is full of surprises welcoming you further towards this ep's depths.

Track four, ‘’Niya” Starts as it means to go on with classic tribal deepness, illustrating Mundell's mastery of slow building intelligent music. Bursts of chorus, bass and high pitched harmonics and steel drum tones enter with magical slight. Sounds rise and fall in unison moving onto the fundamentals of the track in cool breakdowns pushing us onwards with a beautiful melody line drifting across the soundscape.

The final track of this ep is “Parallel Minds”, another beautiful design for sound and base heads, with a Detroit edge. Lost in this Model500 type dream sequence are obvious lysergic undercurrents, with firmly centred bass throb and Reese stylings adding to the creative panning, that clearly illustrates meaning. The stage is set for some more classic 909 / 808 hybrid patterns that launch us with a gravity wave of reverb drenched phasing. A clear highlight for fans for the cult of motor-city music.
